New Scientitist published Polite computers win users’ hearts and minds, an article about a study done by Jeng-Yi Tzeng at the National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan. Tzeng says his results show that courteous computers that say “I’m sorry” will make people less apprehensive about using them. Today, error messages from most computer operating systems make the user feel stupid or somehow at fault.
One interesting quote in the article is from Eric Horvitz of Microsoft, who stated, “As computers have got more powerful, people have come to expect them to behave more like collaborators and less like tools or appliances.”

I dont want computers to be polite- thats just gonna do so many bad things. First off, its gonna increase time to create a ‘nice computer’, and everything in the O.S will have to be re-worded. Next problem is the problem that people prefer to be blameless….’im sorry i couldnt close the CD-rom drive because you presently have a coffee cup in it, but its entirly my fault’ - i do not want to see that pop up on my screen…(not that i have a coffee cup there) lol. I like my computer being brutally honest with me!! At least its something else in my life that will actually tell me the truth.
