librarians

San Diego area library school students in the SJSU School of Library and Information Science are seeking internship opportunities in libraries: public, special, and academic. Generally, they need to do 135 hours of professional work to earn 3 academic credits. However, if you have a project requiring a librarian’s assistance that is less than or more than 135 hours, those are welcomed too, as these future librarians are eager to put their specialized knowledge to work. The internship, or practicum, must be completed within a semester, but a student may opt to enroll in the practicum experience for an additional semester for an additional 135 hours.

Typical internships may require the tasks of organizing and cataloging; online database implementation; preservation and archiving; assisting in designing a small library; bibliographic instruction; or library Web site design. A listing of past internships offered to SJSU SLIS students in Southern California is at SLIS Internships.

A site supervisor must make a commitment to set up a work schedule; give guidance and feedback; and maintain contact with the faculty supervisor.
The full guidelines for a site supervisor and an explanation of the program is at Practicum Guidelines.

Here is your opportunity to provide guidance to a future librarian and to get a dream project started or completed with a professional’s help. To get started, look at the bottom of the SLIS Practicum page for the link to the practicum proposal form or the e–mail links for Elizabeth Martinez, the SJSU SLIS contact for Southern California, or Lori Lindberg, the archives practicum contact.

I would like to gather together all the San Jose State University School of Library and Information Science weblog links in one place, and I have started a page. Look under the sidebar for “SJSU SLIS Connections” for the link to that new page. There are only two on it today, but I am sure there must be more than three of us doing blogging.

I feel like I have won an honorable mention. LIS Blogsource mentioned this site. It is amazing that they found me so quickly. This is a great motivator, and it means I must live up to my goal of a minimum of two postings a week. Thanks!
