Moving Librarian Way and ProgrammingPeers in my spare time is going to take more time. However, the Librarian Way is up in Wordpress at librarianway.com. In order to maintain links, I put librarianway under programmingpeers.com, as it was before. You need to change your link and news aggregator subscription to point at librarianway.com. I tried it in Bloglines and it works.

I will change the ProgrammingPeers DNS tonight, so that should resolve for most people by tomorrow.

I chose Wordpress for Librarian Way—I am moving it from Movable Type. I like Wordpress so far, but I have a lot of reading and studying to do to get it configured as I like it. I am also trying out a theme from Vanillamist.com called connections. There are many things about it that appeal to me, but it too needs tweaking to make it more usable. Some Web sites have options in their blog to let the user change the font size of the Web site. I need to add that to this design for accessibility reasons.

I will eventually get back to fixing the broken block quotes. If there is anything seriously broken, please feel free to email me at nodewalker at hotmail dot com and I will try to fix it right away.

What a learning experience! My new hosting service, site5.com, has a modified cPanel called netadmin for administering the Web site. They also have Fantastico, which makes it easy for novices to install Open Source blogging software, wikis, content management systems, etc. I have never used it because my previous hosting service, which I was with since May 2001, did not offer such a package. It is actually not much use to me right now, as I wanted the latest software with the security patches. Security is so important. So, I bypassed Fantastico after I saw it was one version before the security patches, and I installed Wordpress and Drupal from precompiled packages and using the command line with a direct ssh login.

I spent a lot of time installing Drupal, a CMS, for programmingpeers.com. It has a long way to go. I don’t like the theme that I chose. I actually don’t like any of the themes and will have to create my own. This will take most of the summer. I like that Drupal lets you create a taxonomy, but I found that I have to create a taxonomy from scratch and this is not something one can do quickly, particularly when my new mission for programmingpeers.com is not set in my mind.

Once I have Drupal working the way I want, and I have a good grasp of how to change it, I will create a CMS for Librarian Way. This probably will not happen before the fall. Right now, I expect I will have a CMS for LW and will stick with Wordpress for the blogging part. I still haven’t figured out how to import old blog entries into Drupal’s blogging module without losing a lot of information. It will take a bit of time to work that out. I have started a blog in Drupal, but it is certainly not as feature-rich as Wordpress.

I work on a Macintosh. I haven’t checked how things display in various browsers in Windows, and I haven’t checked anything except Firefox on the Mac. Let me know if you find something really annoying. Thanks. Oh, BTW, I now require logins in order to post. Sorry I have to do this, but I really have no time to monitor this blog for spam.

I am quickly getting tired of waiting for site5.com to finish what I asked so that I can get my Web site set up. I have waited over a 36 hours so far for a response. I am a patient type. [ 9 p.m. PST: I just received email telling me that the changes have been made, so I guess I will stick with site5.com at least for a few weeks to see if things get better.]

In the meantime, I am taking another look at micfo.com. I am also looking at textdrive.com, which might be more my speed. A lot of geeks over there. I even looked at linode.com, but I don’t have time to run my own Virtual Server until I finish this MLIS program.

I haven’t been posting anything because I have been spending countless hours looking at hosting services—in addition to a full-time job, a current SJSU SLIS class in PHP/MySQL, and redesigning/replanting my garden. I just signed up with site5.com (micfo.com, dreamhost.com and bluehost.com were in the running) and now need to move this Web log and everything else (a lot of invisable stuff on this Web site).

Target date for the DNS name changes to my new host is Saturday, June 18, 2005. This Web site directory will then be at librarianway.com.

I am still not totally sold on site5.com, but what they offer for the price is excellent.
