The Old Man and his Grandson is a German short fairy tale collected by the Brothers Grimm in Grimm's Fairy Tales. An old man could not eat neatly, so his son and daughter-in-law made him eat by the stove and, when he broke his bowl, bought him a cheap one. His four-year-old grandson played with wood and said that he was making a trough for his parents to eat from when they were old. After that, they let him eat at the table and did not complain about the spill.
Tom Thumb tells the story of a woodman's wife who wishes that she and her lonely husband could have a son. She insists that she would happy with a son no bigger than her thumb, and indeed, that's what she and her husband are soon blessed with. Tom never grows in size, but he does in mischievousness, cleverness and a desire to get ahead. One day, when two strangers happen upon him inside a horse's ear, they offer to buy Tom Thumb from his father, so that they can make their fortune taking Tom from town to town and showing him. Tom's father refuses the deal - so much does he love his son - but sneaky Tom persuades Dad to take the money, assuring his father that he will quickly slip away from the hulking strangers and return home. And indeed, Tom does initially escape his new masters, but his attempts to negotiate a human-sized world - as well as his inability to forgo a good scam - lead to more problems. Tom finds himself trapped in a mouse-hole, a cow's stomach, a pile of dung, and a wolf, before finally finding his way home.
The Brothers Grimm, Jacob (1785-1863) and Wilhelm (1786-1859), were born in the German state of Hesse. They were universally known for the collection of over two hundred folk tales they made from oral sources and published in two volumes of 'Nursery and Household Tales' in 1812 and 1814. Although their intention was to preserve such material as part of German cultural and literary history, and their collection was first published with scholarly notes and no illustration, the tales soon came into the possession of young readers.
