About the book:
"The Elves and the Shoemaker" is a 1806 story about a poor shoemaker who receives much-needed help from elves. It is the first of three tales included in the original story “The Elves”. A poor shoemaker finds his shoes being completed each morning when he hasn't had time to finish them. He and his wife prosper from this additional labor, so they stay up one night to see what's actually happening. They see two naked little elves working on the shoes, so out of pity they sew some clothes for the little elves. The elves decide not to work anymore now that they look so dashing, but the shoemaker and his wife continue to thrive.
“Snow-White and Rose-Red” is also a German fairy tale. This is the best-known version, the one collected by the Brothers Grimm. A poor widow lived with her two daughters; since they're so kind and pious, they wander in the forest all the time and the animals all trust them and keep watch over them. One night they open the door to find a talking bear standing there. He reassures them that he won't hurt them. The bear becomes their playmate, until he has to split to defend his treasure from the dwarves. The girls resume playing in the forest. They see a dwarf and they help him. This happens two more times - them rescuing the dwarf, but each time he is ungrateful and says mean things to the girls. The last time they see the dwarf, their friend the bear is attacking him. The bear turns into a handsome prince and you need to reed it to find the end.
The Brothers Grimm, Jacob (1785-1863) and Wilhelm (1786-1859), were born in the German state of Hesse. They were universally known for the collection of over two hundred folk tales they made from oral sources and published in two volumes of 'Nursery and Household Tales' in 1812 and 1814. Although their intention was to preserve such material as part of German cultural and literary history, and their collection was first published with scholarly notes and no illustration, the tales soon came into the possession of young readers.
