NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Legendary Navajo policeman Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn takes center stage in this riveting atmospheric mystery from New York Times bestselling author Anne Hillerman that combines crime, superstition, and tradition and brings the desert Southwest vividly alive.

Joe Leaphorn may have retired from the Tribal Police, but he finds himself knee-deep in a perplexing case involving a priceless artifact—a reminder of a dark time in Navajo history. Joe’s been hired to find a missing biil, a traditional dress that had been donated to the Navajo Nation. His investigation takes a sinister turn when the leading suspect dies under mysterious circumstances and Leaphorn himself receives anonymous warnings to beware—witchcraft is afoot.

While the veteran detective is busy working to untangle his strange case, his former colleague Jim Chee and Officer Bernie Manuelito are collecting evidence they hope will lead to a cunning criminal behind a rash of burglaries. Their case takes a complicated turn when Bernie finds a body near a popular running trail. The situation grows more complicated when the death is ruled a homicide, and the Tribal cops are thrust into a turf battle because the murder involves the FBI.

As Leaphorn, Chee, and Bernie draw closer to solving these crimes, their parallel investigations begin to merge . . . and offer an unexpected opportunity that opens a new chapter in Bernie’s life.

Another excellent read in this series!!! Joe Leaphorn is investigating stolen artifacts. Bernie is investigating a homicide that is involved with Leaphorn”s investigation. A mentally deranged daughter in a Navajo family is the main suspect in the case. Betrayal, deceit and greed are her primary motivations. Enjoyed immensely!!! My highest recommendation!!

I always like how there are so many story lines in her books. Interesting, we’ll developed & consistent characters. Plenty of details and background, but not overwhelmingly so.

Bernie needs to start eating her veggies and slow down on the soda. We call that being akamai in Hawaiian;) I love these books, glad I found them. I lived in Santa Fe and then Albuquerque when I was little for a few years- reminds me of that time in a beautiful place. Aloha and mahalo Nui Loa

A page-turner, rolls right along, with all the usual characters you’d expect from her father’s books. First Anne Hillerman book I’ve read & probably not the last!

Keep writing more! You have captured the spirit of your Dad’s work and added a deeper dimension to the characters. Love Chee and Bernie! Randi Hill

I was introduced to Tony Hillerman and the Four Corners mystery series by my late mother in the 1980's. I have read them all several times. The Tale Teller is the 3rd of Anne Hillerman's continuation stories about the Navajo Nation and surrounding area I have read and the continued development of main characters, Lt Joe Leaphorn, Sgt Jim Chee and Manuelito has been a seamless extension of her father's great work. I served in the U.S. Army with several Navajo boys in the 1960's. The Code Talkers movie was also a testament to the honorable Navajo people in American history. Keep up the good work!
