Description

The thrilling history of the Targaryens comes to life in this masterly work by the author of A Song of Ice and Fire, the inspiration for HBO’s Game of Thrones.

With all the fire and fury fans have come to expect from internationally bestselling author George R. R. Martin, this is the first volume of the definitive two-part history of the Targaryens in Westeros.

Centuries before the events of A Game of Thrones, House Targaryen—the only family of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria—took up residence on Dragonstone. Fire and Blood begins their tale with the legendary Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and goes on to recount the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold that iconic seat, all the way up to the civil war that nearly tore their dynasty apart.

What really happened during the Dance of the Dragons? Why did it become so deadly to visit Valyria after the Doom? What is the origin of Daenerys’s three dragon eggs? These are but a few of the questions answered in this essential chronicle, as related by a learned maester of the Citadel and featuring more than eighty all-new black-and-white illustrations by artist Doug Wheatley. Readers have glimpsed small parts of this narrative in such volumes as The World of Ice & Fire, but now, for the first time, the full tapestry of Targaryen history is revealed.

With all the scope and grandeur of Gibbon’s The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Fire and Blood is the ultimate game of thrones, giving readers a whole new appreciation for the dynamic, often bloody, and always fascinating history of Westeros.

“Fire and Blood” offers an immersive dive into the history of House Targaryen, giving readers a rich tapestry of events through two distinct perspectives. What truly captivated me was the narrative style, where the story unfolds through the eyes of both a maester and a court jester. This dual approach allows you to piece together the truth for yourself, as the conflicting accounts add layers of depth to the lore. It’s a fascinating way to explore the history of Westeros, making every twist and turn feel like a mystery you’re uncovering. Wish I would’ve held the actual book as I read. Only thing that would’ve made it better. 10/10

girl i have not finished a book in YEARS! i thought i just lost my affinity for reading, but evidently i was just not reading good books. watching house of the dragon and hyper fixating on it propelled me to start reading f&b, which in turn led me back to my old hobby of writing. i've never been so inclined to continue reading books. onto a song of ice and fire i go!

  • A historical recollection

GRRM stopped working on winds of winter to write this, so he could squeeze another TV series out after GOT. it’s a historical recollection that tries to fly through 130 years in 900 pages. Hundreds of characters appear, without truly getting to know any of them. Stories are told in as little detail as possible. It’s nearly impossible to immerse yourself in the setting of the book. I’m looking forward to reading ASOIF, since I know it must be better than this. This is a great *supplement* book to the universe of the known world, but by no means is a standout must-read novel. It’s original, I’ll give it that, but it’s been seldom done before for good reason.

I got lost in this beautiful Targaryen history book four times. I am now on my fifth reread, and it hits just the same each time. Hope to see more works from George in the future.

I really enjoyed this read about the Targaryen History especially of Aegon the Conqueror (there may or may not be a series and I didn’t want to wait any longer) and also wanted to finish before season 2 of HOTD. Can’t wait for Volume 2 of Fire & Blood-with The Mad King and Robert’s Rebellion BUT something tells me we’re gonna be waiting a while…

If you have seen the TV series, this book really helps explain the history of the characters.
