Introduction

A couple of days ago I happened to find myself in a gathering where a number of the guests were keen and very avid gardeners. After the normal usual topics had been exhausted – children, grandchildren, budget, finances, best places to invest hard earned money and so on and so forth, it was natural that they came out with their own views on gardening, bottle gardens, dish gardens, miniature gardens, terrariums, cactus gardens, outdoor plants, I had to smile ruefully to myself. They had begun again!

And they would continue talking about this absorbing subject rental their wives came to pull them away from their group and have something to eat. For a newbie who does not know much about gardening, or has just begun to take an interesting look at plant life growing around him, such a discussion is going to be interesting only if he has any interest in it. This book is only for those people who have either begun to take an interest in gardening, or are looking for the latest – the word latest is an euphemism for age old common sense traditions and procedures which have been in existence for millenniums all over the world, but every new gardener who has discovered it considers it to be the best thing and latest thing and most wonderful thing after sliced bread.
