Description

THE INSTANT NATIONAL BESTSELLER

No Ordinary Dog is the powerful true story of a SEAL Team Operator and military dog handler, and the dog that saved his life.

Two dozen Navy SEALs descended on Osama bin Laden’s compound in May 2011. After the mission, only one name was made public: Cairo, a Belgian Malinois and military working dog. This is Cairo's story, and that of his handler, Will Chesney, a SEAL Team Operator whose life would be irrevocably tied to Cairo's.

Starting in 2008, when Will was introduced to the SEAL canine program, he and Cairo worked side by side, depending on each other for survival on hundreds of critical operations in the war on terrorism. But their bond transcended their service. Then, in 2011, the call came: Pick up your dog and get back to Virginia. Now.

What followed were several weeks of training for a secret mission. It soon became clear that this was no ordinary operation. Cairo was among the first members of the U.S. military on the ground in Pakistan as part of Operation Neptune Spear, which resulted in the successful elimination of bin Laden.

As Cairo settled into a role as a reliable “spare dog,” Will went back to his job as a DEVGRU operator, until a grenade blast in 2013 left him with a brain injury and PTSD. Unable to participate in further missions, he suffered from crippling migraines, chronic pain, memory issues, and depression. Modern medicine provided only modest relief. Instead, it was up to Cairo to save Will's life once more—and then up to Will to be there when Cairo needed him the most.

A man and his dog, I never tire of these stories. The stories play out every day a round the world. Universally, a man’s best fried is his dog, and he is his dog’s best friend too. I have had many best friends—Barron, Ebony, Tisha, Trout, Nuddleman, Dutch, Rosebud, Daisy, Gus, Ruby, and Hoot—and cannot imagine life without my best friends. Thank you, Will, for sharing the story of you and Cairo with us. God Bless you and best wishes.

Excellent book. I loved reading every page of this book and cried my eyes out at the end of it. Excellent way to pay tribute to the four legged soldier on one of the most important military special operations missions in recent history.

Will writes with ease and from the heart. I bought this book yesterday, slept about 5 hours just so I could cut into it again, and finished it at about the 20 hour mark, so to say it was hard to put the book down is an understatement. Making a strong emotional attachment to both Will and Cairo was easy, and reading to the end of the book was both anticlimactic (Naturally, I didn’t want the last page to come) and tear-ridden. My only hope is that Will eventually starts working with dogs again and finds a whole new purpose stateside; he and Cairo both deserve it, to say the least.

Any who is a dog lover will love this book! More specifically, if you are involved, or know anything about the world of working dogs, this book will keep you glued to it. Listening to “Cheese’s” story is one that will stick with me for a long time.

A must have for any library. You don’t have to be a military reader to appreciate the perspective of honor and respect for Cairo and Will Chesney. Will’s narration is done well adding to his personal commitment in honoring his best friend and follow SEALS. An extraordinary story of history told in a heart felt bond of fellow soldiers and canine that should have the highest honor for his loyalty and sacrifice for American freedom.
