Description

A woman's birthday party takes a dark turn in a poignant, heart-stopping new novel from the reigning queen of suspense, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of Behind Closed Doors, The Breakdown, and Bring Me Back.

“A heartbreaking page-turner that will have you up at night reading just one more chapter.” —Catherine Steadman, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Something in the Water

“The phenomenal B.A. Paris has done it again! I devoured The Dilemma in one sitting—it grabbed me from the very first page and wouldn’t let go until I’d finished. Secrets, guilt, shame and heartbreak—this story has it all in spades.”—Sandie Jones, New York Times bestselling author of The Other Woman

Knowing the truth will destroy her. Keeping it secret will destroy him.

It’s Livia’s 40th birthday, and her husband Adam is throwing her the party of a lifetime to make up for the wedding they never had. Everyone she loves will be there, except her daughter Marnie, who’s studying abroad. But Livia is secretly glad Marnie won’t be there.

Livia has recently uncovered a secret about their daughter which, if revealed, will shake the foundation of their family to its core. She needs to tell Adam, but she’s waiting until the party is over so they can have this last happy time together.

Adam, meanwhile, has his own surprise for Livia: he’s arranged for Marnie to secretly fly back for the party. But before Marnie arrives, Adam hears some terrible news. Now he too is faced with a dilemma: Does he share what he's learned with his wife? Is hiding the truth the same as telling a lie? And how far are Adam and Livia willing to go to protect the ones they love—and give each other a last few hours of happiness?

Reviews

  • Not the greatest read

It was a very hard read. I couldn’t finish it to be honest. I got to page 363 out of 485. I was frustrated for the most part. The constant overthinking every single chapter, the waiting to tell their partners the news that kept getting dragged on for mostly the entire book. It was a bore of a read and I don’t really recommend.
  • Long, drawn out sadness

The back and forth recap of events from each character’s perspective became tedious. I began skimming paragraphs just to get to the point. The story was a long, drawn out heartbreak with no tangible conclusion.
  • Do not recommend.

I want to start by saying I have absolutely loved every other book B.A. Paris has written. However, this book left much to be desired. It was hard for me to finish it because the story was so drawn out. This book could’ve been 100 pages. There was no mystery or thrill like I was expecting after reading her other books. I would skip this one.

Let down by one of my favorite authors! Shallow characters and expected more of a psychological thriller from this author. This is more of a tear jerker family drama that fell flat. Tedious to read as the story is dragged out.

This was extremely boring. I did the audio and it didn’t grab me at all so I’m giving up

I loved behind closed doors but this book was just ok. Quick read but not that interesting.
  • Frustrating

I love all other books by this author, but this one truly misses the mark. Each chapter was a build up to the same conclusion - over and over and over again. I started to skim the pages due to there being no fundamental change to the story, just more inner monologue saying the same thing. Nothing thrilling about it. Will continue to read this author, but will leave this off of my recommendations list!

Way too many times around the barn for such a disappointing end.
  • Terrible

Poorly written, boring and predicable. I did not waste my time finishing it. It is troubling that this is a bestseller.
