Tom Clancy was the master of setting a scene. I have never felt more tense and claustrophobic than I did while reading this book (multiple times). Plot-driven with enough fleshed-out characters to create an excellent thriller.

The OG Jack Ryan novel. First re-read in a long time. It’s simply classic work by Mr. Clancy. A must read for anyone who enjoys military/govt thriller types. One. Ping. Only.

Very good read. I haven’t read a book in nearly 10 years, and when i did it took me over a month. I got through this in right over 2 weeks! Very detailed! Only thing I wish it had, were occasional maps to showcase the movement and the plotting of all the vessels mentioned. Other than that, awesome read!
  • Movie was better!

I’ll give Clancy (RIP) a pass as this was his first novel, but the book paled in comparison to the movie. The ending was unexpected and provided the page-turning suspense Clancy’s novels are renowned for. It just took too long to get there. The mind-numbing military acronyms and jargon and tiresome white-hat vs black-hat caricatures are annoying, although both are standard Clancy. And I would have preferred more suspense as to Ramius’ intentions to defect rather than launch a rogue attack (as was made in the movie). An worthwhile read, but a bit of a slog.

All the technical info was authentic but too difficult to keep up with for my taste. I liked the different perspectives (US vs Soviet Union) I’m glad I saw the movie before reading this book.
  • Still a classic

Even after all this time and knowing how it ends, it is still a great read. Yeah, Clancy was never going to win a literature prize, but he does tell a pretty good story. One issue, DARPA doesn’t have programmers.
  • Better than expected.

I didn’t think I’d like this book, I was waiting for it to read like a engineering manual. I was pleasantly surprised, it was an easy read, introduced the characters, and their backgrounds well. I’m moving to the next book, Patriot Games.
