Description

In 2005, Brandon Sanderson debuted with Elantris, an epic fantasy unlike any other then on the market. To celebrate its tenth anniversary, Tor is reissuing Elantris in a special edition, a fresh chance to introduce it to the myriad readers who have since become Sanderson fans.

This new edition begins with a preface by author Dan Wells, the first person to read the completed novel, and a new afterword by Sanderson explaining how he came to write the book and its place in the Cosmere, the unified universe of all his Tor novels.

Also included is an expanded version of the "Ars Arcanum" appendix, with more of the technical details of the book's magic that fans can never get enough of.

Elantris was truly a milestone both for Sanderson and for the genre of epic fantasy. It deserves this special treatment, something Tor has done only once before, with Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game. Sanderson fans old and new will be excited to discover it.

Reviews

  • Rushed and Superficial . . . By comparison

Tell me if this sounds familiar: You watch a movie or show and ask hopefully “Is this based on a book?” because you need to experience everything the movie or show was forced to gloss over? That’s how I felt reading this book. Except, this is the book, and that’s what we get. Harsh review from someone who is new, but invested in the Cosmere.
  • Starts slow but is worth it

This book starts a little slow as it has quite a bit to set up, but the characters are engaging and interesting. By the end you will be hooked and happy that you stuck with it

While it’s clear that this was Sanderson’s first published work, it’s still a great cosmere story. I wouldn’t recommend reading this first if you’re looking to start the cosmere though, start with mistborn. It was really cool to see how Brandon has improved in his writing, character development, and his worldbuilding. You can see the seeds of characters and worldbuilding that Sanderson has created in the Stormlight archive and mistborn series in this book. Overall, another engaging Sanderson story.

Not necessarily what you’d expect from your usual fantasy book but a fantastic starting point for those new to the Cosmere.

The world is vibrant, the characters deep and real and the magic unique and exceptional! All the pieces for a truly compelling fantasy story and Sanderson delivers it all with aplomb! I truly loved this story and this world, I can only hope to read more of Galladon.

Loved this story. Though it is obvious this is Sanderson's first work it is also fantastically executed and all the characters stand out as unique and interesting. I'll definitely read it again someday!

Multi threaded and intriguing, lacks some of the edginess of the authors later works, but I throughly enjoyed it.
