Description

Innocence dies so easily. Evil lives again . . . and again . . . and again.

One hundred years ago in Port Arbello a pretty little girl began to scream. And struggle. And die. No one heard. No one saw. Just one man whose guilty heart burst in pain as he dashed himself to death in the sea.

Now something peculiar is happening in Port Arbello. The children are disappearing, one by one. An evil history is repeating itself. And one strange, terrified child has ended her silence with a scream that began a hundred years ago.

  • A horrifying debut!

Suffer the Children, which I read as a paperback, was a horrifying story! I found it really bold and daring that a writer would create a story in which small children were regularly murdered during the final half of the book. John Saul is an author who’s not afraid to take risks to tell a good story and, in Suffer the Children, it paid off! The book became a bestseller despite the fact that Saul knew many readers probably wouldn’t want to read about young children being brutally murdered. I recommend this amazing debut to all horror fans with one warning: If you don’t like horror tales that depict children falling victim to grisly murders, this might be a book to avoid.
  • Bad transcription

I love this story, it's one of my favorites. The transcription, on the other hand, really is horrible: made up words, misspellings, terrible punctuation, really enough to confuse the reader, and make them not want to continue on. It starts early in the story and continues full throttle to the end. Please make sure these iBooks are edited and ready for distribution. I should've just gone and gotten a hard copy.

This was the book that got me into John Saul back when I was a Teen back in the 70's - early 80s. If you want to pick one of his books to start with, pick this one. A thriller all the way through. This book was published back in 1977.
