The plot moved very slowly and the characters lacked personality. I also found some of the leaps in insight, logic or whatever you want to call it to be unbelievable. As my math teachers used to say, show your work. How did the characters deduce their conclusions.
Had me hooked from the start

Small town has an annual festival where a 6 week old newborn is found left behind. Her mother isn’t someone who’d leave her child, yet she’s missing and after a year long absence an out of town police officer comes to town for a christening and becomes immersed in the whole mystery of this case. He also learns of another unsolved hit and run case from 6 years prior and that case haunts him as well. The perpetrators in both cases were a huge shock yet the interpersonal relationships and connections between all these townspeople is lovely.
Another great Harper read

I can’t say this one was my favorite but I really enjoyed it, as I’ve enjoyed all of her books. The mystery was intriguing and cleverly crafted.

Not the best from Jane Harper

I was bored reading this book and skipped a lot of pages just to see the ending. I don’t know why the author thought we would be interested in reading pages and pages of mindless boring flirtations between Falk and his yet another middle aged love interest. I don’t know how it was relevant to the story - it wasn’t. Maybe it was supposed to be cute, but it was just boring for me. All of her previous books kept my attention till the end, but this one was just one big disappointment.

At times, obscure in the relating the story. Decent read, characters interesting.
Terrific characters and local color

The story line is pedestrian and the pace is very slow, but I didn’t really mind because I enjoyed the characters and the glimpse at Australia’s wine country. Not Jane Harper’s best, though, so fans of her work should tone down expectations.
