Only giving two stars because the writing was very good but honestly feel like I might be messed up since I actually went through reading this book. Holy moly was this book f***ed up!
  • Sounds like it’s written by an edgy high schooler.

Extremely cringey unrealistic characters. It’s pretty short. If you want to read something quick and disturbing it is a good choice, but don’t expect an interesting or well written story.

I’ve had Dead Inside on my reading list for a bit after seeing tons of great reviews. It was a really short read and the list of triggers that should come with this book is almost as long as the book itself. BUT I am conflicted. I love the books that keep me thinking about the traumatizing words on those pages for weeks after I have stopped looking at them, but this one was a tad disappointing. Yes, the subject matter was truly gross, disturbing, and flat out vile, but the whole book sounded like a teenager’s attempt to sound edgy when they post dark humor memes online to look “cool”. Many of the scenes that should have been hard to read were followed up with some kind of dark joke, taking away the ick and making it more of a dark comedy. Which, very well may be the author’s goal in this book. But I WANT ALL THE ICK. There were many reviews that mentioned how well written this book was, and I just didn’t see it in this one. I had expected it to be a little different is all. Like I said, messed up stuff, but the story telling was bland. THAT BEING SAID, I can say that the author did a good job at providing the POV of a sociopath and their need to benefit only themselves and their desires. That the main character was often behaving in a way “normal people should,” only based on the behavior of those around him or in movies he had seen. It was interesting to see this point of view. So, in that sense, maybe the emotionless telling of this story is appropriate and the author is a genius because the main character is unable to feel emotion at all. So, that’s where I’m at. I don’t know what to think or feel after reading Dead Inside. But I do know that it didn’t traumatize me like I was expecting.

This was by far the most grotesque book I’ve ever read and I couldn’t put it down. 10/10. Masterpiece of gore and horrors.
