A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
A Today Show #ReadwithJenna Book Club Pick

A propulsive and uncommonly wise novel about one unexpected wedding guest and the surprising people who help her start anew.

It’s a beautiful day in Newport, Rhode Island, when Phoebe Stone arrives at the grand Cornwall Inn wearing a green dress and gold heels, not a bag in sight, alone. She's immediately mistaken by everyone in the lobby for one of the wedding people, but she’s actually the only guest at the Cornwall who isn’t here for the big event. Phoebe is here because she’s dreamed of coming for years—she hoped to shuck oysters and take sunset sails with her husband, only now she’s here without him, at rock bottom, and determined to have one last decadent splurge on herself. Meanwhile, the bride has accounted for every detail and every possible disaster the weekend might yield except for, well, Phoebe and Phoebe's plan—which makes it that much more surprising when the two women can’t stop confiding in each other.

In turns absurdly funny and devastatingly tender, Alison Espach’s The Wedding People is ultimately an incredibly nuanced and resonant look at the winding paths we can take to places we never imagined—and the chance encounters it sometimes takes to reroute us.

The Wedding People, a sub-sect of society that I’ve never thoroughly thought about but here we are. I really enjoyed Phoebe's story, because at its core that what this was. The journey a woman takes during a week of wedding celebrations that she wasn’t invited to but somehow becomes ensconced in. While at times it was predictable, it was never cliche, which it very easily could have been. This story of lost heartbroken Phoebe, doesn't end when she finds herself, in fact, its conclusion is her first step into an uncertain world that she is scared but excited to enter. Because anything, even the fear of the unknown is better than ending it all. While it’s hard for me to simply summarize this novel, I would definitely recommend it to the right person.

A head’s up in the description would have been nice before I purchased this book that contains painful content

I started with the sample and could not believe how quickly the character development engaged me. It’s not a story type that I would normally select, but I needed a book to read. I continue to be amazed at how well developed the characters are, and how the author fills the page, based on it’s initial simple premise. It deserves to be on the best seller list for sure.

When I read the synopsis I didn’t think I’d like the book. I felt that a suicidal stranger and the bride were connecting and the main characters? Will it read as disingenuous? But, this worked out so perfectly well and it was full of such hilarity and comedic timing. The acerbic wit of Lila and the Encycopedia knowledge of Phoebe, one was so immensely indifferent with life, its grand celebrations and self importance that she was a little surprised at the entitlement of the bride; she’d also spent the last 2 yrs in solitary misery due to her husband’s cheating with her best friend and her inability to conceive despite her snd Matt’s best efforts. Their marriage suffered greatly from all the disappointments and depression from Phoebe and when she finds her cat dead, her only thing she had left of Matt and another loved one she’d grieve she packed it all up to head to RI. The bride is marrying Gary. Who has a 12 yr old daughter who is making everyone call her juice and the rest gf his family who aren’t her fans and have not even attempted to pretend otherwise. All they do is talk about his “dead wife” and she’s sick of it and bans all talk of her the weekend long celebrating at the hotel and this clearly doesn’t sit right with the adults in Gary’s family and gives Juice more ammunition to be cruel to any of Lila’s charms. When a maid of honor is unable to make it, Lila throws her suicidal only confidant to step in her place. She agrees and they begin following the itinerary and as Phoebe who is profoundly grateful she didn’t die is witness to the weird thing with Bride and Groom, aside from the obvious 12 years difference. She comes to see then all in the vulnerable and hilarious family dynamic at play and in the end she has made life long connections and is feeling so much love for life. As for the rest.,. Read the book!
