This book has been stuck in my mind since I read it in high school English class more than two decades ago. I re-read it every few years, and it generally holds up well. The female characters are one-dimensional and underdeveloped, but I suppose that is a product of its time. But the world Shute sketches of a society slowly grinding toward oblivion is an all-too-plausible sketch of the end of humanity.

I had to read this book for my seƱor year in high school and I just loved it. Rather than being a normal book with a plot and climax it focused on trying to emotionally show you why we as humans must learn to live together; and how are unimportant feuds will bring the end to all of human creations and culture. *Spoiler Alert* Rather than end with a typical story book ending Shute wants the reader to know that if this happens there will be no saving us it will be our inevitable demise. Great book!

Very flat characters, some in denial others just alcoholics. Very stupid ending you could predict from the text on the purchase page. Save your money.
